Logo design for Little Massingham Barn

The background:
Little Massingham Barn is an events venue situated in the grounds of Little Massingham House, an Edwardian period family home in Norfolk. Recently renovated for event use, the family wanted to promote it specifically for weddings. Having found some of our previous wedding venue work, they asked us to create a brochure for the Barn. However, being a completely new venture, they had no branding and so needed some logo design help.
The solution:
We wanted the logo design to be in keeping with the history and family ethos of Little Massingham. We researched the history of the house and the period, as well as design styles of the period. A logo was then designed using the traditional Caslon typeface and simple dividers. This is why:
Little Massingham House, whilst built in the Edwardian Era (1904-1905), was built in a Georgian style (c.1714) at the request of the owner
The Georgian era ran from 1714 to 1830
In 1734, after 14 year’s work, William Caslon finished creating a typeface specimen sheet that is reckoned by type historians to have single handedly ended the Dutch monopoly on type founding. The Caslon typeface also marks the rise of England as the centre of typographic activity.
Caslon’s slightly bracketed serifs and old-style irregularity give it a ‘homely charm’. This charm ties in perfectly with Little Massingham House’s own statement that it is “grand in a homely way but not austere”.
18th century text treatment was simple, with no-frills dividers and large use of uppercase characters:
